All of us have said that we love another person (or a pet, or our hobby, or ice cream). But what is really meant by “love?” Is love a recognition of virtue in another? Or is it a bestowal of value? Is love rational and can it be justified? Is it an emotion…or a syndrome?
What is the relation between love and care, intimacy and autonomy? Does love represent a union with another? Is love good?
Philosophers have addressed these questions for over 2,000 years (spoiler alert: they have not agreed on the answers). This talk will explore some of the interesting and thought-provoking ways in which philosophy has challenged what we think we know about love.
