The League of Women Voters of Albany, Saratoga and Schenectady Counties, and the Albany Public Library invite you to participate in a four-session online group reading and discussion series.

Flourishing in the Age of Climate Change explores skills we need to successfully navigate the distinctive environmental, social, and economic challenges of the twenty-first century. Our inability to address increasing resource constraints, social conflict, and ecological decline leaves many with a deep pessimism that saps motivation for change and exacerbates political polarization. Drawing on research from environmental science, ethics, psychology, sociology and educational theory, William Throop shows why cultivating underdeveloped skill sets associated with collaboration, humility, frugality and systems thinking can enable flourishing within our context. He also illustrates how we can strengthen such skills individually and how education can scale up their cultivation, which will be essential for achieving sustainability.

Rich in stories and highly accessible, Flourishing in the Age of Climate Change is a hopeful, practical resource for readers passionate about creating a world where we can thrive, and where flourishing is widespread.

To explore these matters, participants in this 4 part Zoom series we will read and learn about

Flourishing in the Age of Climate Change by William Throop.

The discussion is led by the author. Dr. Throop is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Environmental Studies, Green Mountain College. He served as the College’s provost for 12 years and was active nationally in promoting sustainability education, serving on the board of directors of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) for six years, and as chair for two years.  Bill has published widely in professional journals and edited the first book on philosophical issues in ecological restoration.
